Sophia Dawson, ‘Yes, Grandmommy’, 2011, Richard Beavers Gallery

Signature: Front

Portrait of two panther cubs next to words taken from Assata Shakur's autobiography. In a few words Assata's grandmother instills in her a sense of pride, confidence, self love and respect for herself and others. After I was introduced to the Black Panther Party in an African American history class, my professor suggested that if I wanted to learn more I should first read Malcolm X's autobiography and then Assata Shakur's. What followed were readings by Angela Davis and George Jackson whose words are also buried under layers of text and paint in this painting.
