About Sophie Crumb

Sophie Crumb has been drawing since early childhood. While Crumb has gained wide acclaim and success as a cartoonist and author of Belly Button Comix, she has always applied her unique style to drawing and sketching. It has only been recently that she has been letting these private and often highly personal works out of her studio and into the public domain of art galleries and exhibitions. She self-critically describes her own style as “scratchy, dark, neurotic, self-loathing and wannabe underground.” While she is largely self-taught, Crumb—daughter of celebrated artists R. Crumb and Aline Kominsky Crumb—also gained experience apprenticing at a tattoo parlor. Her drawings often feature expressive self-portraits, autobiographical scenes, scenes from rural France and New York City, and lately works inspired by French and American celebrity tabloids. These last works take a critical tone against the media’s influence and invasion into our personal lives.
