This photograph was taken backstage of the state circus in Budapest, where I was working on a story of youth from countries that would soon join the European Union. As usual, the circus atmosphere was a mix of childlike joy and sadness. This clown, which I later learned was a Russian artist, had eyes filled with endless sadness. But maybe this was also because of his disguise. It seemed to me as if he already sensed nostalgia for a world soon to disappear.
I think of this image as nostalgic poetry – the feeling of emptiness for the useless waste of searching for life's meaning.
