About Stephanie Bell May

Stephanie Bell May uses objects as metaphors for social and political concerns, particularly feminism, in her sculptural and two-dimensional works. Born and educated in Mexico—though she also studied in the United States—Bell May is influenced by Mexican masters such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Rufino Tamayo. Kahlo’s surrealism is evident in Bell May’s emphasis on allegorical content about wounds. The complex, layered surfaces of her works function as metaphors for skin, which serves as a symbol for different identities and human plight.
