About Stephen G. Rhodes

Borrowing ideas from theme parks, period cinema, TV shows, and museum displays, Stephen G. Rhodes splices together historical and pop-cultural artifacts in amalgamations of video, collage, photography, and sculpture. His sprawling installations, which often embrace humor and a low-tech approach, attempt to unearth our collective unconscious. For example, Rhodes’s 2010 film installation Receding Mind: Circle of Shit was inspired by Steve Allen’s late-1970s TV talk show “Meeting of the Minds,” which featured dramatized roundtable discussions among historical figures such as Cleopatra, Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Attila the Hun, and Emily Dickinson.
