As an artist Stephen Hansen considers himself, not an explorer of the human condition, so much as a hapless tourist. His work primarily is paper-mache, the appeal of which is that the material is so inherently humble that the artist can claim to make "cultural icons" or distilled social observations" with out feeling pretentious. Stylistically, the work is lifelike rather then realistic, a choice made out of a desire to represent ideas rather then individuals. His latest series "Great Moments in Art' are an art history exercise in the unconventional. His ever-famous 3 dimensional “painter” becomes an “artist” who discovers the secrets of master artworks by Klimt, Lichtenstein, Van Gogh and many others.
