About Stephen Hughes

On his travels throughout Europe and America, photographer Stephen Hughes skirts cities and towns, investigating the peripheral sites where urban development trails off into nature or wasteland. Hughes captures these marginal places from a distance, producing landscapes with a vastness and stark emptiness, further emphasized by the almost complete absence of human beings in his photographs. When people do appear in his photographs, they are often alone, sometimes in small groups, and always dwarfed by the world surrounding them.
