Steven and William Ladd, ‘The Dark Crystal’, 2016, Chamber

Steven and William Ladd’s work references their shared history. The brothers find unique entry points to their memories and experiences through the process of breaking down materials. These materiality explorations frequently evoke childhood imaginative and physical landscapes. “The Dark Crystal,” is a maquette for new sculptural work that utilizes paper mache and beading, resulting in topographies reminiscent of the lunar surface. The piece takes its name from the Jim Henson fantasy-adventure film set on a distant planet.
