Awkward Stage

About Suellen Parker

Suellen Parker combines techniques of sculpture, photography, and digital compositing to create characters that eerily span the gap between human and artificial. When it comes to making her sculpted figures come alive, “photography helps, but Photoshop is where it all comes together,” Parker describes. She begins each piece by creating a clay sculpture using photographs of models for reference; she then photographs the sculptures under studio lights before digitally “painting” on colors and shadows and pulling in photographed backgrounds and real-life eyes and lips from photographs. "I try to think about these characters as people,” Parker has said. “A lot of time they're based on people I know, or people I think I know.”
