Susan Kleinberg, ‘Balafre 1’, 2017, The Watermill Center: Benefit Auction 2017

Susan Kleinberg is an American artist based in New York. This final color test for a new print is developed from her piece, “Balafre,” currently in the Palazzo Fortuny exhibition, INTUITION for the Venice Biennale. Growing out of an invitation from the Louvre, the images originate using the museum’s most highly-powered microscope, referencing meteoric material that composes the crown of an ancient demonic statue (Afghanistan, 3,000 B.C.) from the collection. The video piece from which the image derives includes a soundtrack which is the hum of the universe from the hour of the new gravitational wave detection, and the wave, coming to us across 1.3 billion years.
