Susan Preston, ‘Nov16 1’, 2016, Rabley Contemporary

Susan uses the visual elements of mark, line, tone and colour, independent of external references. Each is used to create an image that holds the attention and draws the viewer into their ambiguous spaces.

Susan Preston divides the rectangle into sections or panels. She builds structure on a subtle ground where the lines are sometimes patterned, sometimes playful and meandering. They are confined to the panels with echoes of the marks throughout the series.

The paintings are modest in scale. Their strong presence is underpinned by the tension between the layers of oil paint. There is a sense of light coming from within the paintings and a grittiness that mitigates any tendency towards a casual elegance.
