About Susan Rothenberg
Best known for her large-scale paintings of horses made between 1973-80, Susan Rothenberg’s more recent work features subjects including the inside of her studio and the natural surroundings by her home in the rural Pacific Southwest (her “dirtied-down” colors and thick, gestural painted surfaces reflect the topography of this region). Although Rothenberg often portrays recognizable subjects, her work is rarely transparent in meaning—she has said that she does not “want to get too literal about things,” and wants “the viewer to be able to do the work too.” Rothenberg has been married to conceptual artist Bruce Nauman since 1989.
