About Susannah Phillips

Though trained by realists William Coldstream and Euan Uglow, Susannah Phillips has also cited Abstract Expressionism as an influence in her practice. She creates paintings that blend figuration with abstraction. Phillips picks subjects that are familiar to the history of painting, such as still lifes, interiors, and portraits, but renders them with an image-flattening combination of broad brushwork and contour outlines. Phillips is also known for her ability to evoke light and tonal difference using a limited color palette, usually of grays and neutrals with an occasional accent color. She has exhibited with likeminded painters Graham Nickson, Robert Berlind, and Neo Rauch.
