About Tamara Gonzales

California-born, Brooklyn-based painter Tamara Gonzales creates large-scale, abstract paintings by applying spray paint over lace, a material she is drawn to for its baroque gaudiness, and its associations with both veiling and craft. She collects her fabric from around the world, in yard-sales and dollar-stores, and their patterns form a personal iconography, albeit one arrived at partially by chance, as motifs of dancing men and roses reemerge from work to work. “The patterns [of lace] are like different brushes,” says the artist, “a palette of their own.”
