Tammam Azzam
Syrian, b. 1980
Follow

Tammam Azzam is known for creating powerful paintings, collages and digital composite works that depict destroyed buildings in his native Syria. Already a successful painter, Azzam relocated to Dubai, and later Germany, following the outbreak of violence in 2011.

In his recent Paper and Storeys series (both 2016), Tammam creates collages and works on canvas that communicate the magnitude of devastation experienced across Syria through expressionist compositions of destroyed cityscapes. These monumental canvases are dominated by startling imagery of wartorn buildings reduced to rubble and displaced figures against a barren background. The artist’s depictions are a meditation on rebuilding a destroyed reality through imagery; in chronicling the current state of his homeland, Azzam delves into a cathartic exercise of reconstruction.
