Arsenal - Curtain Exit, 2000
Property from an Important Private European Collection
Property Subject to the Artist's Resale …

Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler are collaborators and life partners. They began to work together in the 1990s in making sculpture, installation, and performances, though now their practice revolves largely around filmmaking and photography. Hubbard and Birchler’s work investigates specific places that are at once personal and universal; as Birchler has said, “We’ve always tried to make work about where we live.” Hubbard adds, “In our work, there is the element of everyplace.” Their films Gregor’s Room II (1999), Detached Building (2001), and House with Pool (2004) look at private spaces in domestic settings, while a photographic series begun in 2000 titled “Filmstills” is a collection of facades of public movie theaters. The artists’ influences include Alfred Hitchcock and Edward Hopper—artists who also create work about psychological space.
