Terrell James was born in Houston, Texas where she attended the School of Art at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts before and after her undergraduate studies. She earned her BA in 1977, graduating magna cum laude at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. Since then she has been featured in dozens of solo and group exhibitions around the United States, especially in her native Texas, where she has become one of the foremost figures in contemporary art. James’ rich work is now on display in several of America’s most prominent art museums including the Dallas Museum of Fine Art and the Museum of Fine Art, Boston.
A truly prolific contemporary artist, Terrell James works in a number of media and produces paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture alike. Her canvases are characterised by an organic dynamism that makes them intuitively inviting, despite their eclectic combinations of line and form. James works extensively with planes and fluid blocks of colour, described confidently and naturally, often linked to one another and structured by distinct line. Her choice of colours leaves little to be desired, each canvas a microcosm brimming with a playfully buoyant diversity of life. James’ experience with a broad range of materials is evident in her painting; she combines apparently disparate formal elements to create decidedly unified pieces with complex provenance. James’ belief in the importance of a dialogue between the viewer and the painting means that one can always find a new intricacy to excite the eye and the imagination.
