Poetic Minimalism Meets Drama in Thilo Heinzmann’s Recent Work

Thilo Heinzmann uses a variety of unusual materials to create his three-dimensional canvases, from cotton balls and hessian to polystyrene and aluminum, often pressed beneath a sheet of Plexiglas. Closer inspection of his pigment on canvas works reveals details and gradations of color that might otherwise be invisible. Usually set against a white or almost-white background, the variously delicate and dense areas of color are dusted on by hand or with various instruments, such as in O.T. (2011).
