About Thomas Øvlisen

Thomas Øvlisen’s diverse oeuvre revolves around the investigation of surface and form in his painted monoliths, wall-mounted sculptures, and objects that he leans against the gallery walls in a nod to certain Minimalist display techniques of the 1960s. He frequently uses an unconventional combination of automobile lacquer and enamel paints on polystyrene foam. Through a process of adding copious layers of paint, followed by repetitive sanding, he creates various strata of colors and textures, generating tension between the errors of Øvlisen’s hand and imperfections of the finish, and the ultra-smooth surface typically used for automobile painting.
