Thoralf Knobloch depicts quiet and poetic moments in and around his native Dresden, working from both photographs and direct observation. Less concerned with narrative than the way a particular site can be transformed through a painting, Knobloch focuses on composition and color, often adopting perspectives typically used in photography. In choosing to depict the ordinary, he allows the viewer to fill the painting with his or her own memories and associations, meditating on the potential of painting to create a density of lived experience around even the most ordinary objects.
