About Tierney Gearon

For the past decade, Tierney Gearon has documented her extended family in deeply personal and psychologically complex snapshots. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Gearon was raised in a family dynamic informed by her mother's mental illness, an experience that in turn informs her need to question and document her relatives. Starting out as a model, Gearon traveled extensively and would eventually be compelled to venture to the other side of the camera, beginning with Polaroids of her fellow models. The images were spotted by an agent who encouraged the start of her commercial photography, which has seen her work appear in fashion houses, Times Square billboards, and the New York Times. After her marriage and divorce, Gearon directed her work toward herself and her family with a specific tendency toward the mother-child relationship and her mother's illness—a delicate subject she approaches with honesty and reverence.
