Timothy Hutchings, ‘The Celestial Spheres’, 2008, Anat Ebgi

The Celestial Spheres, a piece reminiscent of 1960s abstract animation with rhythmically swaying organic shapes creating patterns on the screen. The motion, however, was tracked directly off of body parts in pornographic films - the high abstraction of the animation actually being based in visceral biology. This was also an attempt to tap into the forbidden knowledge that the viewer may or may not have, with the moment of understanding the origins of the film being linked to shame and embarrassment because acknowledging that you recognized the source of the motions as pornography admits to a knowledge of pornography.
