In Exploding Photographs, Collaborative Partners Manipulate Light
This ongoing subtractive multiple exposure photo-based body of work dissects, expands and recasts the hidden vibrant under-layers of the utilitarian light sources we encounter and ignore while we travel at night. The subtractive multiple exposure process reveals a painterly essence transforming the light elements into abstract images reminiscent of brush strokes, spray paint, ink drawings and graffiti. The result is a new way to experience something we are all familiar with. The context is vaguely familiar, but by virtue of various multiple exposure combinations, a new 'reality' is revealed. Our raw footage yields organic motion and structures of light, provoking painterly gestures to express the hidden beauty of brief moments. The uncontrolled and random results fall in step with the intent to capture what is generally overlooked.
The non-traditional print process accentuates the spontaneous gestural nature of the image leaving the impression of other art media.

Photography duo ToLo, comprised of Tom and Lois White, explore the vagaries of light and color in abstract, multiple exposure images. Experimenting with light sources at varying times of day and in a range of locations, ToLo’s work examines how the human eye perceives luminosity. In the “roadway/conversations” series, traffic lamps and neon signs found along roadsides are blurred and obscured through ToLo’s lens. The utilitarian lights shape-shift into forms that resemble brush strokes, geysers, and other explosive elements that evoke motion and metamorphosis. Explosives themselves are captured in ToLo’s “fire/works” series, where chromatically vibrant, incandescent images evoke the wonder and drama induced by fireworks displays.
