In mysterious, richly rendered paintings of uninhabited spaces, Tom McKinley presents a quiet and limited glimpse into the lavish material culture of domestic architecture. Currently based in San Francisco, McKinley was born in Michigan and educated both in England and the United States. His paintings, which depict classic mid-century and contemporary homes, display interior and exterior views void of occupants and yet with minimal clues to their existence (much like the pages of luxury real estate listings or architecture design magazines.) Instead, his frames are filled with beautiful, material items—reflective swimming pools, billiard tables, modern art and furniture, patio verandas—all surrounded by strong architectural geometry and illuminated by twilight or man-made incandescent light in McKinley’s characteristic, photorealistic style.
