About Tom Mueske

Tom Mueske distills painting and drawing into simplified and chance gestural markings, interrogating their function in the larger picture plane. “By isolating marks or brushstrokes and removing them from the context of the picture plane, I emphasize their arbitrary qualities, their weakness and emptiness,” Mueske has said. He uses marker and ink, adorning white museum board with colored flourishes or erratic, concentrated scribbles. His seemingly random compositions teem with energy, creating visual rhythms as lines abut against one another, while raising questions about the subjectivity of his process.
