Tony Lewis is known for his sparse, large drawings in gradations of black and white. The works feature texts culled from a variety of sources, including his personal writings and political vocabularies, both in several languages. In some cases, Lewis generates the words through automatic writing, associative word games, or drawing exercises performed in the studio. He isolates words, letters, and phrases, and then manipulates their context and their meaning; the precisely rendered words are actually hand-drawn in pencil and graphite powder. He has also made a series of drawings, in smaller scale, of brick walls.
