Toyohara Kunichika, ‘Abalone divers beneath the waves’, 1884, Egenolf Gallery Japanese Prints & Drawing

A female abalone diver plunges into the waves, the knife for prying abalone from rocks held in her mouth. Behind her are three companions, one prying at the cliffs, one doing her hair aboard their boat and one climbing onto their boat. This series presented mitate, or humorous comparisons, to the chapters of the Tale of Genji. This is chapter nine, Aoi. The best design in the series.
