About the work
Tucker Nichols
American, b. 1970

Tucker Nichols makes work that borrows imagery from his surroundings; he explains: “I could try to make up everything but that would be silly because there’s so much great material happening outside all the time.” Nichols’ diverse practice includes photography and sculpture, though he is most recognized for his mixed-media paper-based works and room-sized drawing installations. These works often draw on urban environments or subjects, with common themes like billboards or the taxicabs in New York City. In spite of his work’s affinity with Western traditions of abstraction, Nichols says that traditional Chinese painting was his first inspiration. He also notes that he developed an interest in calligraphy and the use of language in art—themes that Nichols explores in his own work through the frequent incorporation of text and writing.
