Tulio de Sagastizabal
Argentine, b. 1948
Follow

Following the radical geometries of South American Abstraction, Tulio de Sagastizabal paints vibrant canvases composed of stripes, grids, and shapes. Recalling artist Carlos Cruz-Diez’s use of space and color, de Sagastizabal’s careful chromatic combinations also suggest Bridget Riley’s optics or Helen Miranda Wilson’s “Stripes” series. In the artist’s Sturmund I, concentric contours vibrate in aqua, orange, and pink tones; in El sol en sombras II (2012) pentagons tessellate in sunny shades of acrylic. The artist explains that his practice grew from the “gesture of drawing” into “the development of graphic symbols.”
