Fukuroi station was a nexus for Buddhist pilgrims The small village was home to three important Buddhist temples— Hattasan Sonei-ji, Kasuisai, and Yusan-ji—but Hiroshige chooses to portray a look at life outside of town. Situated amidst sprawling rice fields, the Fukuroi offered the perfect kite flying conditions. Hiroshige illustrates this local pastime in this print.
