Utagawa Hiroshige (Andō Hiroshige), ‘Kakegawa’, 1855, Ronin Gallery

Seals: Aratame

Condition: Very good color, impression and state.

Signature: Hiroshige hitsu

Publisher: Tsutaya Kichizo

Situated along an old salt route of Shinano province, Kakegawa was both a station stop and a prosperous castle town. For Shinto pilgrims bound for Akiba Shrine, this station marked the last official station before the 20-mile trek to the shrine. In the print, Hiroshige hints towards the challenges of this pilgrimage, shrouding Mt. Akiba’s distant peak in shadow.
