Located in the heart of Edo, Nihonbashi, the “Bridge of Japan,” marked entrance to, or exit from, Edo, the Eastern capital of Japan. Home to the Tokugawa Shogunate, Edo was the political and commercial center during the Edo period (1603-1868). Hiroshige emphasizes the size of the bridge, reducing figures to crossing silhouettes.
