Following a 10 to 14 day journey from Edo, Sanjo Bridge would carry the traveler across the currents of the Kamo River and into the heart of the imperial capital. Though Edo become the capital of Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate, Kyoto remained an economic center and a center for the arts throughout the Edo- period. In this print, Hiroshige obscures the city behind a pink- tinged haze as grey clouds suggest an incoming storm.
