Utagawa Toyokuni II, ‘Kawarazaki Gonjuro Acting as Araiso no Koji’, 1861, David Barnett Gallery

Kawarazaki Gonjuro was a name that the famous Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX used before taking on the Ichikawa Danjuro mantle. He is likely the first Kabuki artist to appear, along with Onoe Kikugoro V, on film in the short movie Momijigari, which was filmed in 1899 under the conditions that it not be shown until after his death. Momijigari has remained to oldest known Japanese film.
