About Valérie Belin

Having employed primary processes of photography in her earlier work, and later used new technology to create pictorial, supernatural images, photographer Valérie Belin walks a fine line between illusion and reality in her abstract and representational work. Though varied between each of her series, Belin's photographs have a signature style that evokes pen-and-ink drawings in their sharp precision, and contextual ambiguity through various means—often by adding an entirely black background or layering multiple negatives. Whether the silver gelatin prints of her earlier work, or the colored compositions (such as interlaid women and flowers) seen in a later series, Belin's photographs pair her artistic background in painting with her broad technical understanding of the photographic medium. Ultimately, Belin creates images that toy with her viewer's senses, through cropping, isolation, illusion, and sculptural representations of the human body.
