Victor Brecheret

Victor Brecheret was a leading exponent of the Brazilian Modernist movement. Brecheret studied drawing, carving, and modeling, and established his own studio at the age of 22. He studied under Arturo Dazzi and adopted the elder sculptor’s taste for monumental figures. Brecheret was also an admirer of Antoine Bourdelle, Auguste Rodin, and Ivan Meštrović, which influenced his early output. He was known for his works in stone and clay, as well as his exploration of Brazilian folk motifs, classicism, and European Modernism, his subjects ranging from the quotidian to the Biblical and mythical.
