About the work
Virgil Marti
American, b. 1962
Follow

In his installations and sculptures, Virgil Marti explores the aesthetic hierarchies of art and design, examining the confluences and divergences between the two categories. His work reflects his upbringing during the heyday of hippie culture as well as the enduring influence of American art movements. The Philadelphia-based artist’s Chippendale-style mirrors feature silver plating—rather than reflective surfaces—and color schemes evocative of psychedelic concert posters and color field paintings. Marti’s interest in interior design extends to his installations. For his contribution to the 2004 Whitney Biennial, the artist created wallpapers, chandeliers, and furniture, staging an encounter between his myriad influences, both kitschy and academic.
