“The surprise of painting is not unconnected to the surprises found within lived experience,” claims Vivien Zhang, who channels influences from her international upbringing—which included Beijing, Nairobi, Bangkok, and London—into exuberant, abstract paintings and drawings. In Spoons (2011), an overlapping arrangement of Chinese soupspoons fills the picture plane, while in Stencil Negative (2013), a fragmented dragon appears to weave in and out of a patterned background. Ranging from small to engulfing, Zhang’s compositions bring opposites into disjunctive harmony. Recognizable images clash with passages of pure abstraction; bright, popping colors and forms mesh with receding elements; gridded patterns are interrupted by sweeping, gestural brushwork; and ordered areas delightfully dissolve into chaos.
