Western Jin, ‘Terracotta Warriors’, ca. 265, ArtAncient

A pair of ancient Chinese terracotta warriors, dating to the Western Jin dynasty, 265 – 316 AD.

The figures stand defiantly, their right arms by their sides, their left raised and pierced, likely to hold a wooden spear in antiquity. Both figures are shown wearing peaked caps and tunics, belted around the waist.

These striking pottery soldiers were created in the same tradition as the famous Terracotta Army, intended to keep watch over and protect their owner.
