The inspiration for the work came from the Chinese Poet Bai Juyi's* poem “Pipa Song and the memory of a Pipa (Chinese lute) musical performance.
Artworks from the “Musical Calligraphy series” are improvised translations of music into the artistic script. Using the abstract calligraphic form of the Chinese cursive script, it's character is unrestrained, rhythmic and emotional.
This "writing" is abstract and has a calligraphic form, resembling Chinese running script, thus the name "Musical Calligraphy." Unrestrained, rhythmic and emotional, each work is my interpretation of a particular piece.
Weislaw took part in an autumn evening cruise on the famous West Lake (Hangzhou), accompanied by beautiful Pipa player. Her enchanting performance inspired him profoundly, sometimes later I created twelve paintings. Each painting is composed of the Chinese character ”夢 (meng-Dream), in the shape of the instrument, written once or many times. Using the Running Script**, a style of the Chinese calligraphy. He also incorporated the name of the Pipa player in the art to create this Pipa Dream series.
- Chinese poet Bai Juyi's白居易of the Tang dynasty (618–907) who used his elegantly simple verse to protest the social evils of his day, including corruption and militarism.
**The "running" script, 行書 approximates normal handwriting in which strokes and, more rarely, characters are allowed to run into one another.
