Wieslaw Borkowski, ‘Pipa Dream 7’, 2014, E-Moderne Gallerie

This work is matted with a silk edge.
The friendship with a pipa (Chinese lute) player and memory of her musical performance. The story reminds the artist of Bai Juyi's poem “Pipa Song.”

One autumn, I took part in an evening cruise on the West Lake (Hangzhou), accompanied by beautiful pipa player. Her enchanting performance inspired me profoundly, and sometimes later I created twelve paintings. Each painting is composed of the Chinese character“夢” (meng - “Dream”), in the shape of the instrument, written once or many times. Besides reflecting that night’s dreamlike atmosphere, the character comes from the name of the player.
