Steiger’s devotion to the landscape perseveres even when his images are devoid of land and instead rely on line and shadow to shape the vista. It is within his scrutiny of the details that the subject emerges, the beautiful sum of many mechanical or architectural parts. By re-examining the form, Steiger focuses on design rather than function. He prefers to eliminate references to time and place such that his work transports the viewer to another era and frame of mind. William Steiger received a BA in Art from the University of California, Santa Cruz and an MFA in painting from Yale University. He is the recipient of numerous grants, fellowships and awards and his work is included in countless private, public and corporate collections. Steiger has had more than 35 solo exhibitions worldwide including New York, Seoul and Tokyo. Hudson Hills Press published a monograph of his work, featuring more than 200 images and essays by 13 contributing writers. Steiger currently lives and works in New York City where he is represented by Margaret Thatcher Projects.
