Won Kun Jun, ‘Untitled’, 2013, Gallery LVS

About Won Kun Jun

Color is the primary focus and fundamental element of Won Kun Jun’s paintings, which explore color relationships and abstract fields of monochrome. Won layers 20-30 thin coats of watered-down paint—shades of red, yellow, blue, and green—onto white canvas, so that the color is evenly distributed and all traces of the artist’s hand are erased, a process that can take up to a year. The result is what Won considers a glimpse into his consciousness—color relationships that convey feeling and visualize his emotions, and which are imbued with an aura, a sense of age, and mystery. Won’s colors generate what he calls “resonance in harmony,” a cohesive equilibrium that recalls the principles of yin and yang.
