About the work
Xiaowei Chen
Chinese, b. 1978
Follow

Xiaowei Chen works in a wide range of media, including painting, video, and ink drawing. Her elaborately rendered drawings explore emotional states and human experience through iconography borrowed from the natural world. Often, she employs a long, narrow format that calls to mind ancient scrolls, allowing the viewer to fully immerse themselves in the work as the eye travels the length of her complex, densely detailed compositions. Seeking to evoke that which is impossible to capture through language, Chen has said, “I have chosen simple tools to record my immediate sensations. Doing so I try to discover what lies within that might be more real and true.”
