About Yanai Toister

Attempting to counter an overabundance of images in the world, Yanai Toister seeks to produce photographs that are not centered on imagery. Instead, he focuses on the fundamental element upon which his medium relies: light. For example, in Nine-Sheet Experiment (2006), Toister took nine squares of photographic paper, exposed them to varying degrees of light, and displayed them in a row. With the resulting line of gray and black squares, Toister displayed the materials and processes used in photographic image creation without actually creating any images.
