Yi Zhou
Chinese

Drawing from a life spent between China and Europe, Yi Zhou’s artwork filters themes found in traditional Chinese art through continental influences. Zhou works across various mediums, but is best known for her video work that fuses architecture, animation, drawing, painting, and sculpture. Her 2011 film Labyrinth takes viewers through a 3D-animated world that serves as a pastiche of historical and contemporary European and Chinese signifiers, juxtaposing iconography from the two continents. The camera calmly negotiates a dreamlike landscape before spinning into chaos, the scenery falling into ruin. Zhou’s choice of medium frees her from the constraints of tradition, allowing her to explore new ideas and methods. “In 3D there are no limitations to what you can do, there are infinite possibilities,” Zhou has said.
