Yoshino Masui paints delicate watercolor landscapes based on the sensory experiences of her childhood and other memories. Masui’s compositions are known for the almost obsessive repetition of simple forms. This approach to image making dates back to Masui’s childhood artistic endeavors—the artist explains, “I was often assailed by the senses that [surrounded] me. I think I tried to understand the world in [its] own way by repeating [its] patterns.” Her works are also affected by her expatriation and her sensations of geographical floating. She also combines carefully articulated lines with smears to create varied textures in her vast, fictional landscapes. These occasionally feature animals, or oblique references to mythological narratives.
