About Yuichi Higashionna

In his paintings and sculpture, Yuici Higashionna explores the excess and kitschy ostentation that was an outgrowth of Japan’s admiration of Western culture after World War II. Riffing on Minimalist form and 1970s Japanese interior design styles, Higashionna’s work can be seen as a satirical commentary on Japanese aesthetics, but also as symbolic of the re-building and revitalization of post-Hiroshima Japan. His work references Op Art, Street Art, and fanshii, a decorating style popular in 1970s Japan.
