Since the mid-1980s, New York-based Iranian-American artist Y.Z. Kami has focused on the portrait’s expressive possibilities. Having studied at UC Berkeley and the Sorbonne in Paris, Kami draws on inspiration from a wide range of sources such as figure painting, Egyptian funerary portraits, 13th- and 14th- century Sufi poetry, and philosophy to explore the relationship between what is actually seen and issues beyond the visible. In his abstract work, Kami uses inventive patterns and variations suffused with similar themes—his “Dome” paintings consist of concentric circles of tessellated marks, forming pulsing voids, while in the “Endless Prayer” series, collaged fragments of Persian, Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic texts are arranged in circular shapes to recall the rhythmic rituals of prayer and the elaborate mosaics of sacred architecture.
