Zackary Drucker is an artist who breaks down the way we think about gender, sexuality and seeing. Her participatory art works complicate established binaries of viewer and subject, insider and outsider, and male and female in order to create a complex image of the self. Drucker uses a range of creative devices that all strive towards the portrayal of bodily identity, her own and that of others, obsessively infusing visual media—photographs, videos and performance art—with acute, masochistic emotional compulsions. Conceiving, discovering, and manifesting herself as “a woman in the wrong world,” her work is rooted in cultivating and investigating under-recognized aspects of transgender history. Drucker disarms audiences and uses her body to illicit desire, judgment, and voyeuristic shame from her viewer.

Zackary Drucker earned an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2007 and a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2005. Her recent film and acclaimed photographs created in collaboration with transgender film director Rhys Ernst were presented in the 2014 Whitney Biennial and have subsequently travelled to number museums throughout the world. She was included in the inaugural Hammer Museum Biennial "Made in L.A."
Drucker has also performed and exhibited her work internationally in numerous museums, galleries, and film festivals including the 54th Venice Biennale (Swiss Off-Site Pavilion); 3rd Moscow Biennial for Young Art; Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; ICA London; Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, Netherlands; MoMA PS1, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Curtat Tunnel, Lausanne, Switzerland; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tromso Kunstaforening, Tromso, Norway; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA; Hammer Museum, REDCAT and LACE, all in Los Angeles, among others. Currently, she is a Producer of the Emmy Award winning Amazon TV web-series Transparent.

Working collaboratively, Zackary Drucker and Rhys Ernst are both artists in their own right: Drucker is primarily a performance artist and photographer, while Ernst is a filmmaker. Their collaborative practice gained public attention and fanfare at the 2014 Whitney Biennial, where they premiered Relationship. Initially a private work, the piece is a series of honest, dreamlike photographs—in the tradition of Nan Goldin—that document their romantic partnership over the course of five years, during which they were both in the process of transitioning (Drucker from male to female, Ernst from female to male). While the subject matter of their work gives it an inherently political element, the artists shy away from didacticism, veering instead toward bold sexuality and intimacy.
